On Dec. 31, 1981, Mississippi State's coach Emory Bellard was carried off the field on the shoulders of his players after MSU's 10-0 victory over Kansas in the Hall of Fame Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. Bellard, a former Texas A&M coach who was credited with developing the wishbone offense, died a little over a year ago at age 83. Although he was a coach at MSU, I really admired Bellard and had a chance to meet him after State's historic win over Alabama in 1980. This photo is from the LA Times.
